Thanks to NUSport for this update on the 2016 Eastern University Games
Eastern University Games Wrap Up
Games highlights include:
- Men’s Hockey winning their 4th straight EUG title
- Rohan Toole claiming individual Gold in Men’s Squash
- 5 Silver Medals
- 2 Bronze Medals
- 8th Overall on Pennants
- 4th Overall on Point Score
- 8th Overall per Capita.
Unfortunately due to extreme weather on the final day, outdoor sports were significantly affected. Some had all progression matches (semi-finals & finals) cancelled with teams ranked by their ladder position at the end of pool games. Others (such as golf and tennis) had the final day of competition completely abandoned. This prevented the opportunity for some teams to play off for higher placings with Football – Women; Touch – Men; and Football – Men all receiving medals based on ladder positions, with no opportunity to play finals matches.
This event also saw a ‘League of Legends’ online gaming competition introduced for the first time. UON was represented by members of the UON Anime Club. This online event enabled students to compete against other East region University teams, with the winner to be flown to Perth to compete in the national final alongside the Australian University Games. The University of Newcastle team placed 4th. This result did not count toward the overall placing of the Universities.
This is the first time since the 2009 EUG in Bathurst that all UON teams achieved a top-10 result.
